our videomaking trip to Kristinestad
our trip to Finland

Tuesday 10 July 2007
We set off from Torino the 10th of July in the middle of the night, we had a plane to catch at 6 a.m. In Bergamo, some 180 kilometers away. The first stop over was in Frankfurt were we had to wait for about five hours, then we flew to Tampere. But we were still quite far away from Kristinestad. We traveled to Pori by train and there we met Inge, the YEPP Local Coordinator, who came to pick us up and drove us to Kilen, the open air museum that kindly had offered to host us for three days. When we finally got there we were exhausted for the long trip but we were alo delighted by the hospitality that we found. Eva, Inge's wife, who works at Kilen offered us plenty of food and showed us to the beautiful cottage we were going to stay at. We are all city dwellers and being in the middle of a wood in front of the sea was such a peaceful and refreshing experience, especially after traveling for eighteen hours. Nonetheless, we put our jackets on (it was rather cold compared to Torino) and walked the few hundred meters to the sea to enjoy the magnificent sunset. It was midnight.
Tuesday 11 July 2007
As soon as we got up ther was a huge breakfast ready for us in the Kilen restaurant. We then had a walk around to have a look at the place and get used to this totally new environment. Kilen is an open air museum with traditional old building - some of them dating back to the 18th century - coming from the surrounding area. The majority od the people who lived there (and of those who are still living there now) are Swedish speaking, so we discovered that in Finland there is a community of Swedish speaking Fins! It was really interesting to visit the old wooden houses and see the furniture inside and the tools that people used to work with in the old days.
In the afternoon we went to Kristinestad, where we met Sofia, a Finnish girl who speaks Italian because her father is from Naples and she was born there. Sofia took us for a tour of the town and, since she works in a café where they make real Italian style espresso, we visited her workplace, as we did several times in the following days. Of course, we immediately grabbed the opportunity of interviewing her for our documentary.
Thursday 12 July
The whole day was dedicated to filming, both in Kilen and in Kristinestad, where we met Anna Kaisa, a girl who lives there and showed us around. We could see the first stools of the Markenat (the Fair) appearing in the central square. The day after the Summer Fair woudl begin. We filmed the preparation of the stools and learned how a lot of people who left Kristinestad for work or study reasons, come back to their hometown during the Summer Fair, to see their friends and families.
Friday 13 July
Another day spent walking around filming the stools of the Fair and interviewing people. On the stools you could find any sort of items: food, toys, clothes, houseware, books, cd's and you name it... After all, the market was very similar to what we were used to in Torino. That night we moved to Sofia's house, where she lives with her mother and sister. They were so kind as to offer to host us for the rest of our stay in Finland. After the peaceful forest of Kilen we were going to stay in the 'big' city and do some real nightlife.
Saturday 14 July
After a troubled night (I was sure that I'd seen a ghost!) we set off again to the Fair. The day was dedicated to 'public relations'. In fact. Our Finnish friends invited us at a Rotary Club lunch. We hadn't really foreseen this so we didn't have any smart clothes but we put up our best smile and just walked into the restaurant. And lunch with Inge and Pelle was very pleasant. At night we were invited to a party at Tom's place – the local Church Minister. There were a quite a few young people from Kristinestad who played live music, so there was a lot of singing, dancing, laughing and (some) drinking. But the night wasn't over, we set off to the huge tent put up for the Fair, where therw was an Irish band playing. The music was so exciting that Livio even managed to fall off the wooden platform and hurt his leg!
At daybreak we all went together to have some hot breakfast in the early morning mist.
Sunday 15 July
After sleeping until late, we went for our last walk around the Fair. It was a gray and rainy day and we filmed the stools being dismantled. In the afternoon Sofia's mother took us to to see an old house out of Kristinestad which had become a museum. The house belonged to an old man who collected objects from the whole world. Kristinestad is a port and there used to be a lot of sailors living there, so it wasn't difficult to find all kinds of objects from different countries. In fact, we spotted in the museum a big and old flask of Martini, coming from Torino!
At night our friends from the municipality and YEPP took us for dinner in a local restaurant/pizzeria, so we had a chance to say thank you to them all for their hospitality. Then Sofia, who studies to become an Opera singer, took us to the Town Hall where she sung for us. Once more I had the feeling that a weird presence had followed us...
Monday 6 July
It was time to go leave! Loaded with the luggage and a little bit sad, we got on the bus to Pori, the first of a long series of means of transport (train, plane, car) that were going to take us back home.
