Tabletop moviemaking workshop

On Thursday November 22nd, 2007 we conducted a Tabletop moviemaking (TTMM) workshop with interested youth workers who work in the area. The session was about two hours long and was designed to be an introduction to the method.

We began with several examples from other workshops to give the youth workers a clear understanding of the method. One of the strengths of TTMM is its intuitive visual method for storytelling. The next step was to look at some of the backgrounds from the local area. These images were formatted and printed out on color paper. This helps trigger stories that are local, and draw on the experience of the participants. Finally some of the participants themselves sent pictures along to be actors inside the movie. Pictures from head to toe work best for using different framing techniques, but we were able to tell a simple story with the materials provided.

From start to finish we were able to shoot a few informal stories, choose one to edit, and then export the final movie above to YouTube. This movie is a good example of the informal nature of the first TTMM movies participants usually make. It is a method that is not intimidating to try. Generally after a few silly movies, participants are well able to draft a story with a bit more attention to detail and produce media pieces that are tightly edited.
